The project
The plot had outline consent for a pair of semis that nobody wanted to build. Our clients bought it with the idea of one good family house that kept as many of the old apple trees as possible.
We set the house at the top of the site so the orchard is the garden. The ground floor is one long room that opens on both sides, and the bedrooms sit above it under deep overhangs that shade the windows in summer.
It's a timber frame wrapped in wood fibre insulation and finished in lime render. With the solar panels on the garage roof, the running costs in its first year were under £60 a month.
