The project

The family had a dark galley kitchen at the back of the house and a long garden they could only see from the bathroom window. They wanted somewhere to cook, eat and do homework, all in one room, without losing the character of the front of the house.

We took out the old lean-to and added a single-storey room the full width of the plot. It's clad in larch that was charred and oiled so it weathers evenly, with one big sliding door to the terrace and a long rooflight over the worktop.

Inside, the old back wall is now a wide brick opening, so the original house and the new room read as two clear parts. The utility room and a downstairs shower sit in the space where the lean-to used to be.
