The practice

A small studio, on purpose.

A drawing, a pen and a set square on a wooden desk

Clara and Tom opened the studio in 2009, in two rooms above the old tannery on 2 Tanner’s Yard. There are four of us now, and we’d like to keep it that way.

Staying small means the person you meet at the first visit is the person who draws your house, deals with the planning officer and stands on site with your builder. We take on around twenty projects a year, which is enough to stay busy and few enough to know every one of them well.

Most of our work is within 30 miles of Morrowby: extensions to terraces and semis, a handful of new houses, and a steady run of listed buildings and cottages that need someone patient. We also work for a few local builders who need drawings and planning for their own clients.

How we like to work

Three things we won’t skip, whatever the size of the job.

01

We visit before we draw

Every project starts at the house, not on a screen. Light, levels, the neighbours’ windows and the state of the brickwork all shape the design.

02

We say what things cost

We check the design against your budget at every stage, with real prices from recent jobs, so there’s no shock when the tenders come back.

03

We stay until the end

The person who draws your house visits the site. Most problems on a build come from details nobody was there to explain.
